“Equilibrium?  What in the world?  I never heard of it before!”  Me neither – until my cool friends enthusiastically recommended I screen this film for our Forum.  And you know what?  I have to say, it is surprisingly engaging for a movie that I never knew existed until this year!  I am tempted to give you the plot but what fun would that be?  Trust me – and my friend were correct:  It is quite entertaining with great action scenes and lots to talk about.  And if you are a Christian Bale fan, it is a must.  It even impressed Roger Ebert, who gave it 3 out of 4 stars, saying:

Equilibrium would be a mindless action picture, except that it has a mind. It doesn’t do a lot of deep thinking, but unlike many futuristic combos of sci-fi and f/x, it does make a statement.

So bring your heart and mind to engage and discuss the message and spirituality behind Equilibrium. At our December Forum, we briefly skimmed through the list including Babette’s Feast, Star Trek, Iron Man I/II, Precious, Casablanca, The Natural [or any other baseball movie or a sports movie or a film about a favorite American past-time], Invictus and Gladiator.

Keep in mind that we are staying away from nudity and hoping for quality discussion-worthy films.  Obviously, we have to wait for the DVD release for some on the list, but at least it gives you an idea that we are aiming to cover different genres for us to explore and discuss.

So here’s your chance to contribute:  What’s on your list of films you’d like to watch and discuss in 2010?

The next WSFF will be on Saturday, 01.23.10 @ 10:30AM.

Obviously, this film requires an explanation – because I could hear all of you murmuring, “What in the world?  I thought this is a serious Forum about weighty movies and topics?”  Indeed, it is!  But, let’s remember that it is December after all, and many of us are busy and can’t really think straight with all the holiday shopping and parties we are committed to.  And before you finish your Christmas shopping frenzy, it might behoove us to watch this film with an open mind to see and hear the message behind Confessions of a Shopaholic produced by Jerry Bruckheimer.

We will also discuss and generate together a list of films you would like to watch and discuss in 2010.

I thought it was a great start to a new ongoing event in West Seattle [and beyond] – a fantastic meeting room, yummy snacks, excellent audio [thanks to Bose!], and best of all, an engaging “round table” discussion about the characters, not to mention getting to know some neat people in our community!

So overall, I think we achieved the mission of the Forum:  View. Snack. Engage. Socialize.

But that’s just me.  I would love to hear what you thought about it so that people can get an idea of what WSFF is all about.
